Through the use of Vernier Data-Collection Technology, the Tower Garden, and other various lab equipment, the middle school science program uses a hands on approach to inspire curiosity in students and increase student learning. A variety of topics are covered ranging from the function and structure of cells to Newton’s Law and extend all the way out to the universe.
With the use of the Vernier Data-Collection Technology, the students are able to use technology to collect and analyze data, this includes temperature probes, pressure sensors, Force and Acceleration sensors as well as motion detectors. Students are able to use pressure sensors to measure the gas produced by living organisms through the process of cellular respiration and then study the graphical relationship between position, distance, time and velocity.
Students use the Tower Garden not only as children of wonder, but also as children of service. During class, the students use the garden to explore the responsible use of resources, as well as alternate methods for food production. Once the plants are fully grown, the students are able to donate the produce to the local Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service.
Students also have the opportunity to explore the body systems through frog dissection, witness chemical and physical changes using common household items, and study the amazing microscopic world. Students continuously are encouraged to explore the world around them and be a Child of Wonder.
