Students gathered in the cafeteria to assemble sandwiches for the homeless, an activity that has been taking place for almost twenty years.
“I began having the students make sandwiches when I saw my parents making a few sandwiches to bring to Karen House and I thought we could make so many more with the students,” said Rose Wieschhaus, DRE at Sts. Joachim and Ann. “The PSR students make them as well at a different time, and we also make them during our Family Service Day”.
The students brought in enough supplies to make 600 sandwiches, which will be brought to the St. Patrick’s Center on Tucker Blvd. in downtown St. Louis. “I think it’s important, because not everyone has everything that I have. Not everyone gets to eat 3 meals a day like I do,” said Madison Brennan, an 8th grader at the school. “ I think it’s important to do this service project because then I get to give someone at least something that I get everyday.” “Our world would be a pretty lonely and sad place if we did not help one another out from time to time, so it is important to do acts of service,” added Beth Bricker, also an 8th grader at Sts. Joachim and Ann. “I really liked making sandwiches for the homeless and hope I can do something like it again.”
St. Patrick Center serves over 142,000 meals each year. The food the community provides is so important to feeding people who need it most. “Something as simple as a sandwich can remind those who are homeless that people are thinking of them.” said Katie Joseph, Senior Manager of Development at St. Patrick Center. “We are grateful for the support of Sts. Joachim and Ann.”
This is just one of the many projects Sts. Joachim and Ann participated in during Catholic Schools Week, reinforcing one of their core values, child of service.
